East coast traditional remodel

Starting out with a small request to add a pot filler, this kitchen renovation grew into a full makeover which gave the family the functional, bright and sophisticated kitchen they’ve always dreamed of.

This project started with the client simply wanting to add a pot filler to her kitchen, and ended in a full renovation creating a stunning, timeless and formal kitchen that the family can enjoy for many years to come. Although the original kitchen had an open layout, the space was dark and dreary due to dark cabinetry with sparse and inefficient lighting. The original kitchen window was behind the sink, looking directly into the neighbor’s kitchen, and the layout wasn’t ideal for family oriented cooking and socializing.
The design challenge was to stay within the existing footprint of the kitchen, while making the kitchen more social and adding seating on the island. The owner wanted to use all existing appliance but leave space for new appliances when it’s time to replace. Another big item on the list was to create better ventilation for the cooktop, which was located on the island with a subpar downdraft. The homeowner wanted a bright kitchen with plenty of light for the cloudy Northwest Winters. The vision was of a more formal, but still family friendly, east coast style space.

To make the kitchen flow better and resolve the issue with the cooktop hood, we switched the locations of the sink and the cook top, so that the sink is on the island and the cook top to the wall where the kitchen sink and window used to be. The existing window was removed and split into two windows flanking the new custom hood. The walk space between the island and back wall was widened to create a better work flow, and we also added a microwave drawer to the back of the island. This makes for easy access for the kids, but keeps it out of view.

To create the light and bright ambiance, classic white cabinetry with Calcutta Barghini counter tops were used, and all lighting was updated with modern LED lights and added larger pendants over the island.
